About MAC

Montclair has long been proud of its unique character as a vibrant arts community and a dynamic cultural destination. The Montclair Arts Council was formed in 2005 to enhance that reputation by advancing the arts, advocating for and supporting artists and cultural organizations, and encouraging economic development through the arts. As a nonprofit organization, MAC has taken on the role of building links within the arts community, between the arts community and Montclair residents, and between artists and Montclair’s business community.

How does MAC do that?

The Montclair Arts Council has a 26-member Board of Directors, representing various constituencies.

First, many Montclair arts and culture organizations have institutional seats on the Board: Montclair State University, the Montclair Historical Society, the Montclair Public Library, the Montclair Art Museum, Montclair public schools, Luna Stage, Montclair Economic Development Corporation, and the Montclair Center Business Improvement District. Through MAC these respected institutions hope to help each other, sharing resources and coordinating strategies to better serve the residents of Montclair and surrounding areas.

The second group of board members consists of individuals from artistic disciplines. These directors act to serve the interests of individuals and organizations in dance, film, literary arts, music, theater and visual arts.

Third, there are seven seats representing patron sectors such as senior citizens, businesses, students and the community at-large.

In addition, six board members are appointed by the Township to contribute their expertise to council.

Jim Peskin was appointed Executive Director of MAC in January, 2006.
